Addressing Parliament, Energy Minister Leila Benali emphasized the strategic importance of natural gas in Morocco’s energy mix, citing its low carbon footprint and its role in facilitating the integration of renewable energy and boosting industrial competitiveness.
She noted that Morocco entered the international gas market in 2022 and successfully repurposed the Maghreb-Europe pipeline. A national infrastructure development plan is now underway, aiming to connect the new port of Nador to key industrial areas and future gas hubs, including Dakhla.
Benali also pointed to intensified exploration activities—particularly in the Tendrara region—and the development of a new gas law, which is currently under review.
In the mining sector, the Ministry has reinstated 277 permits across 78 companies, the majority of which are Moroccan. These initiatives are expected to generate MAD 2 billion in investments and create approximately 6,000 jobs.
Acknowledging earlier delays in renewable energy deployment, the Minister highlighted recent progress: renewable energy now accounts for over 45% of Morocco’s installed capacity, up from 37% in 2021. On environmental matters, she announced the implementation of new decrees regulating medical and hazardous waste, alongside a comprehensive waste management law that is nearing completion.
