Israel’s national fire and rescue service has reported it is dealing with multiple “major” incidents following a missile strike launched by Iran, including rescue efforts in a high-rise building in the greater Tel Aviv area.

In a statement, the fire service said crews are actively working in the Dan region, which includes Tel Aviv, to put out fires and rescue individuals trapped in damaged buildings. One significant operation involves a blaze in a high-rise, where people have been reported trapped. Two additional locations with structural damage are also being addressed.

Footage from AFP showed flames and thick smoke rising from a residential tower in central Tel Aviv, with a large section of the building’s base blown out by an explosion. Another nearby building, close to Israel’s Ministry of Defense, was also struck.

The attack came in response to Israeli strikes on military and nuclear targets in Iran. In retaliation, Iran launched a wave of drones followed by two rounds of missiles.

According to Israeli military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin, fewer than 100 missiles were fired in total, and most were intercepted by air defense systems. However, he acknowledged that some missiles did hit buildings, either directly or due to falling shrapnel.

Following the first missile barrage, a large plume of smoke was seen over Tel Aviv, and debris littered the streets of nearby Ramat Gan. AFPTV footage showed damaged buildings with torn facades, and emergency responders working to clear vehicles crushed by falling concrete and metal.

At least 21 people were injured, according to Israel’s emergency medical service Magen David Adom, with two individuals in serious condition.

One local resident, Chen Gabizon, recounted running to a shelter after receiving a missile alert. “Then came a loud explosion. Everything was shaking—smoke, dust, it was everywhere,” he told AFP. He said he planned to stay with relatives or at a hotel for the time being.

The situation remains tense as emergency crews continue to assess the damage and support affected residents.
