Rabat – The Moroccan U-20 national football team advanced to the final of the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) and earned a prestigious ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, following a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Egypt on Thursday, May 15.
The match’s only goal came in the 78th minute, courtesy of El Abdellaoui, sealing Morocco’s place in the final, where they will face South Africa.
Facing a physically strong Egyptian side, the Atlas Lion Cubs showed resilience and determination. The opening half-hour saw few chances, with the most notable effort being a deflected corner safely handled by the Egyptian goalkeeper.
Egypt’s aggressive approach led to numerous fouls, while Bemassouadi came close to scoring late in the first half, but couldn’t convert his efforts.
In the second half, Morocco continued to press forward, despite Egypt’s compact and disciplined defensive line. In the 53rd minute, Laalaoui broke through but was denied in a crucial one-on-one by the Egyptian shot-stopper.
On the defensive side, Moroccan goalkeeper Benchaouch remained largely unchallenged, as Egypt failed to create any clear-cut opportunities.
Persistence paid off when El Abdellaoui found the back of the net in the 78th minute, capitalizing on a rare gap in the Egyptian defense to give Morocco the lead.
Egypt launched a desperate offensive in the final minutes, creating tense moments during stoppage time, but Morocco held firm to protect their lead and claim victory.
Despite some missed opportunities and technical imprecision, coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s squad achieved their two primary goals: reaching the final and qualifying for the U-20 World Cup.
The young Moroccan side will now prepare for a highly anticipated final clash against South Africa, with the African title up for grabs.
